ENERGY
Ali pledges major grid overhaul as demand surges
President Irfaan Ali says Guyana needs major investment to strengthen an unreliable electricity network as demand expands with the economy. An InterEnergy assessment put August peak demand at 242.6 megawatts, up 18% from 2024, and projects demand could rise about 138% by 2029 as GPL adds more than 62,000 customers.
Why it matters: Reliable power is becoming a binding constraint on homes, businesses and new investment. Delivery of transmission lines, substations, storage and new generation will determine whether the grid keeps pace with growth.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS
Guyana’s economy grows 33.3% in first half of 2026
The government’s 2026 Mid-Year Report estimates real GDP expanded 33.3% in the first half, while the non-oil economy grew 10.1%. The full-year growth forecast was revised to 20.8%, with non-oil growth projected at 10.2%; capital spending reached nearly G$250 billion and private-sector credit rose 11.5%.
Why it matters: The figures show oil-led expansion continuing alongside broad non-oil growth. The key test is whether rapid public investment and credit expansion translate into durable productivity, jobs and manageable inflationary pressure.

MIGRATION & DIPLOMACY
Guyana says it retains final say in US migration arrangement
President Ali says Guyana can approve or reject every third-country national proposed for transfer under its one-year arrangement with the United States. Eligible people must have final removal orders and medical clearance, while unaccompanied minors, Guyanese nationals, people with pending US asylum claims and those with known violent criminal records are excluded.
Why it matters: The framework has raised questions about sovereignty, human rights and accountability. Its credibility will depend on transparent vetting, legal safeguards and clear reporting on who is accepted and what happens next.

BORDER & SECURITY
Guyana prepares for ICJ ruling in Venezuela border case
President Ali says Guyana is confident in its case over the validity of the 1899 boundary award and prepared for any reaction when the International Court of Justice rules. The government expects a judgment between November 2026 and January 2027 after oral hearings concluded in May.
Why it matters: The ruling will be legally binding, but Venezuela has rejected the court’s authority. Guyana’s diplomatic and security planning will matter as the country seeks a peaceful outcome without destabilising the border region.
