ENERGY
GPL grid strains under record electricity demand
GPL says peak demand reached a record 242.64 megawatts, up 21.6 megawatts from last year. Public Utilities Minister Deodat Indar said recent outages stem from transmission and distribution limits during unusually high use, while the utility is adding lines and expects demand to ease by December.
Why it matters: Households and businesses are facing outages even when sufficient generation is available. The immediate test is whether network upgrades can reduce disruptions during the remaining hot-season peak.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS
Guyana records US$778 million oil-fund inflow in August
The Bank of Guyana reported that US$778 million flowed into the Natural Resource Fund in August, according to Kaieteur News. The total includes petroleum proceeds and a signing bonus, but a full transaction breakdown was not yet available in the central bank’s public quarterly reporting.
Why it matters: The inflow expands the public resources generated by the oil sector, while the missing breakdown makes the next detailed NRF report important for transparency and oversight.

MINING
Four more non-nationals detained in Potaro mining crackdown
The Natural Resources Ministry says GGMC wardens detained four additional non-nationals after expanding an operation against illegal mining in the Potaro district. Officials also reported finding concealed excavators and trucks and seizing dredges, generators, pumps and metal detectors.
Why it matters: The operation tests Guyana’s ability to enforce mining laws, protect the environment and account for minerals extracted from remote areas.

LOCAL DEVELOPMENT
Construction begins on G$1.52 billion Pouderoyen Market
The government has turned the sod for a two-storey market at Pouderoyen in Region Three. The G$1.519 billion project is expected to take 18 months and expand space beyond the market’s 78 registered vendors, including room for roadside sellers and new businesses.
Why it matters: The project could improve conditions for vendors and draw more commercial activity to the community, but its impact will depend on timely delivery and effective management of the expanded facility.
