PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY
Bigger public projects put government spending under sharper audit scrutiny
Auditor General Deodat Sharma submitted the Audit Office’s 2025 report to the National Assembly, warning that Guyana’s rapidly expanding budget has produced larger and more complex infrastructure projects. He said auditors are strengthening their review of quantities, costs, schedules and contractor performance, while using more real-time audits.
Why it matters: The national budget has grown from G$383.1 billion in 2021 to G$1.558 trillion in 2026, increasing the importance of timely and technically rigorous oversight. The report’s findings on project execution, Natural Resource Fund withdrawals and cash-grant programmes will matter once it is laid before Parliament and becomes public.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS
GMSA urges hospitality, garment and ICT firms to scale up
Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association President Rafeek Khan says businesses in hospitality, garments, agro-processing, ICT and other service sectors should invest in capacity as the economy expands. Speaking at the GuyExpo 2026 launch, he said the event can connect local firms with investors, distributors and regional markets.
Why it matters: Economic growth creates demand, but Guyanese firms will capture more value only if they can meet standards, increase output and build durable commercial partnerships. Access to finance, workforce skills, reliable energy and export readiness will determine how many small firms can scale successfully.

HEALTH & COURTS
Full Court clears Health Ministry to take control of VAMED hospital sites
The Full Court set aside five preservation orders that had restricted the Ministry of Health’s access to the Georgetown Paediatric and Maternal Hospital and New Amsterdam Hospital Campus projects. The judges found that the orders effectively imposed restrictions similar to interim relief that had already been refused and lacked an adequate legal foundation.
Why it matters: The ruling allows the ministry to regain control of sites and equipment while the underlying contract dispute with VAMED Engineering continues. Attention now shifts to construction continuity, protection of project assets and the timetable for completing both hospitals.

SPORT
Horatio and relay team win South American Games medals for Guyana
Shamar Horatio won bronze in the men’s 200 metres at the South American Games, running 20.53 seconds, before helping Guyana’s men’s 4x100-metre relay team add another medal. The results extended Guyana’s medal campaign as the athletics programme concluded in Argentina.
Why it matters: The performances add international exposure for Guyana’s sprint programme and provide a benchmark ahead of future regional and global competitions. Sustained coaching, competition access and athlete support will determine whether these results translate into stronger championship performances.
