REGIONAL SECURITY
Ali links regional stability to investor confidence
President Irfaan Ali told a business gathering in New York that regional peace, democratic stability and cooperation are essential to attracting and retaining investment. Addressing Guyana’s border controversy with Venezuela, he said the country will continue pursuing confirmation of the 1899 boundary through the International Court of Justice while supporting regional security cooperation.
Why it matters: Security concerns now intersect directly with Guyana’s development strategy. Investors will watch whether diplomatic and legal channels can preserve stability as energy, infrastructure and other capital-intensive projects expand.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS
Guyana Development Bank targets nationwide access
The Guyana Development Bank is expected to begin operations on October 5 with US$100 million in initial capital. The government says a mobile application and service desks in commercial banks will widen access for rural, hinterland and riverine communities, with eligible borrowers able to seek up to G$3 million through financing options that include zero-interest and zero-collateral loans.
Why it matters: The model could broaden financing for small businesses that lack conventional collateral or easy access to branches. Its impact will depend on transparent eligibility rules, careful credit assessment, effective mentoring and public reporting on who receives financing and how loans perform.

HEALTH
AI and digital pharmacy move into focus
Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony says Guyana plans to introduce OpenEvidence, an AI-powered medical information platform, initially for about 300 physicians and some nurses. At a pharmacists’ symposium, he also urged wider use of digital pharmacy tools to flag possible dosage problems and medication interactions.
Why it matters: Clinical decision-support tools could help professionals identify risks and keep pace with medical evidence, but they must complement—not replace—professional judgement. Safe adoption will require training, privacy safeguards, reliable data and clear accountability for treatment decisions.

INFRASTRUCTURE
New East Coast transmission line targeted for November
A new 69kV transmission line through the East Coast Demerara backlands is expected to be completed by the end of November. The replacement route will allow the existing line along the Plaisance Railway Embankment to be removed so four-lane highway works can advance without disconnecting the Demerara and Berbice power systems.
Why it matters: The project links road expansion with grid reliability: removing the existing line too early could trigger major outages, while delays could slow the highway. Delivery by November will depend on difficult construction through wetlands, timely equipment arrivals and coordinated switching of the power network.
